What is in a Name?
Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
Psalm 124:8
So much is in a name. Names identify people with different cultures, countries, ethnicities, and families. Names carry meanings causing parents to search for the perfect name for their child. Names offer a way to file things in our brains as we categorize people, places, and things. I could not imagine a world where names did not exist.
When women find out they are pregnant, one of the first things they begin to process is What will I name my baby? Will I have a Junior, naming him after his daddy? Will she have an elegant name or a fun name? My sister and her husband are in the stages of brainstorming names for their little one, now called Baby Blueberry. We all wait in anticipation for what name they will choose.
While there are thousands of names to choose from and more being created each day, there is One Name that surpasses all, the name of our Lord. Simply speaking God’s name brings help, hope and encouragement to people in times of trouble and despair. When asked about who God is, many recount the vast amount of names for God in the Bible. He is our Creator, Comforter, Healer, Beginning and End, Redeemer, Messiah, Father, Forgiver, All Knowing, All Seeing, Mighty God. He Is.
Sister, our help is in God. If you are feeling discouraged, call His name. If you are rejoicing today, call His name. If you are confused, call His name. He will be there. He is listening. He cares about each one of us. We are His precious daughters and He has named us children of God. Now, that is a name!
