"I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want." (Philippians 4:12)
Have you learned the secret of being content? Paul had. He mentions being content in this verse and in the one that precedes it. ". . . I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances." (Philippians 4:11b) How many of us can say that we have learned this kind of contentment? Paul was not indifferent to the circumstances of his life. He had "learned" to adapt to them and make the best of them.
What were some of the circumstances in which Paul found himself? 2 Corinthians 11:23-28 lists numerous persecutions that Paul had come through. He had been imprisoned, beaten, exposed to death, stoned, shipwrecked, without sleep and food, cold and naked, just to name a few. How could he be content?
Chuck Swindoll, in his book Laugh Again, writes this about Paul, "He was convinced that Christ was in the midst of his every day, pouring His power into him. When we believe that, anything is bearable. Nothing is out of control."
How about your life? Have you felt out of control lately? Are circumstances overwhelming you?
Have you focused on the fact that God really is sovereign? He is in control. Remember that the desire of God is to make us stronger and more like Jesus Christ. A situation which we may see as distressful, or out of control, may be seen by God as an opportunity for growth in our character.
Look to God, today, as the one who is in control.
"I can do everything through him who gives me strength." (Philippians 4:13)
